阿波山川の地に紙づくりの技術がもたらせれたのは、今から約1300年前のこと。
以来、紙づくりの伝統は耐えることなく人々の暮らしとともに歴史を歩み続け、いつしか和紙はたんなる物質を越えた独特の生活文化を作り上げてきました。
アワガミファクトリーでは、手漉き和紙の伝統文化を守り継承することだけではなく、むしろ和紙を伝統という世界から解き放し、
新しい素材の作り手として使い手の声に耳を傾け、さまざまな技法の開発・素材研究を行ってきました。
現代の生活空間へ、そして次代へと生かしきる和紙文化の新しい発信拠点を目指しています。

Born in Yamanashi Prefecture in 1960. Graduated Musashino Art University, Department of Painting in 1984. Finished Graduate Program with a major in printmaking at Tama Art University in 1986. Went to Belgium in 2008-2009 to study stone lithography while continuing to release works made with a combination of digital output and offset lithograph techniques. He uses a wide range of lithography techniques in his work.

この展示会は版画表現を行なう上で、その支持体となる紙素材の在り方を重要と考えるアーティストと阿波和紙によるコラボレーションです。
2007年2月の「阿波紙・版画展」に引き続き、阿波和紙と版表現の可能性を追求し、より多くのアーティストの声が開ける場を設けることで、
素材の作り手として、より望まれる素材への手がかりを知り得る機会となることを期待しています。

The"Awagami printing art exhibition Nov.2007" was organized as a collaboration between Awagami and the artists who have attached utmost importance to the role of paper as a material to express their art works on prints. Following the success of "Awagami pirnt Exhibition" in February 2007, we will continue to pursuit the possibilities of expression in printmaking and Awa Jpanese papers.Though more collaborations directly with artist,we are looing forward to have more inputs and to seek the clues of most desired material by artist as paper maker. 日仏友好150周年という記念すべき年に、パリの天理日仏文化協会で「和紙の様相2008」が在仏日本大使館はじめ、関係者のみなさまのご協力とご尽力のおかがで開催するができました。
パリにある四カ所の版画工房の協力を得て、日仏両国の芸術家の心と技を阿波の紙に込めていただきました。
これらの作品は、和紙という素材と、工房それぞれのすばらしい技術によって、芸術家の創作活動に新たなエネルギーが与えられ、生まれました。

アワガミファクトリーでは「阿波紙・版画展（2007年2月）」「アワガミと版画表現展2007（2007年12月）」の開催を経て、
版画表現を行なう上で、その支持体となる紙素材の在り方を重要と考える版画アーティストと阿波和紙によるコラボレーションを行なってきました。
これらの活動の延長で2008年10月にパリで、日仏交流150周年記念事業の一環として開催される「和紙の様相 2008」においては、
パリの4つの版画工房と12名のアーティストとのつながりを持つ機会を得ました。
この展覧会はこの連携により、日本で活躍する版画工房とそのアーティストの参加を交え、より広い視野からの阿波和紙を用いた版表現の展開を感じていただけたらと思い企画されました。

En février 2007, Awagami Factory a organisé l'exposition « Awagami – Gravures », puis, en décembre　2007, « Awagami et Expression-gravures », deux expositions d'Awagami Factory en collaboration avec des graveurs qui privilégient l'importance du papier pour soutenir leur expression.
La suite de ces activités a donné lieu à l'exposition « Le Papier Japon : Aspects 2008 », à Paris, dans le cadre de la commémoration du cent-cinquantième anniversaire des relations franco-japonaises. Ce fut l'occasion d'entrer en relation avec quatre Ateliers de gravure parisiens et douze artistes.

Dans ce contexte, nous avons ajouté cette fois-ci des Ateliers de gravure japonais et des artistes japonais actifs au Japon. Nous souhaitons que les visiteurs ressentent le dévelopement d'un large panorama quant aux possibilités des papiers d'Awagami.

 

4回目を迎える「阿波紙と版画表現展」は、新しい素材による創作に関心が高く、素材の持ち味を貸した表現技術・技法を有する
若手作家にご協力を得て、その成果をご覧いただける機会を得ました。
アワガミファクトリーは、版表現を学ぶ教育環境においても、和紙がより身近な、馴染みやすい素材と成り得ることをめざし、
このような活動を継続しています。
今回制作に使用された素材アワガミファインアートペーパー「竹和紙」「白鳳」にも着目していただき、
素材と作品から織りなす多用な表現から、阿波和紙と版表現との展望を感じていただきたく思います。
また私どもは今回の経験を真摯に受け止め、新たな和紙づくりに精進する所存です。

As our 4th exhibition,we have attained the oppotunity to show the outcome of cooperation with the yound artists who bear immense interests with new medium and high techniques in printmaking.
Awagami Factory has been continuously working on the activity for the people to aware the Washi as close ant familiert material at the academe of print art.
As we undertake this experience of this time sincery,we pledge to work on to develope and produce the new Japanese paper.

2007年の「阿波紙・版画展　– 6人のアーティストと版形式 - 」を皮切りに、
特に版表現による素材として阿波和紙を用いた展覧会の開催も本企画で5回目となります。
2011年の展覧会ではこれまでの活動より縁深く関わりを持つことができた三井田盛一郎氏（東京藝術大学　准教授）によるコーディネートにより、
素材の持ち味を生かした表現技術・技法を有する精鋭の作家陣に協力を得て、特に凸版、凹版をテーマに創作を試みて頂きました。

2011 marks the fifth year since our first show-2007's "Awagami Printmaking Exhibition". Over the past 5 years, we have focused on the myriad of expressions artists achieve through relief and intaglio printmaking on washi. This year we have invited Professor Seiichiro Miita of Tokyo Fine Art Univ. to curate the show and assemble a group of pioneering artists whose creative expression is fully realized through printing on washi. Based on the results attained from the exhibition and our dialogue with the artists, Awagami will move forward to pursue a broader range of creative applications for washi.

素材としての和紙の開発が伝統を継承する大きな原点と考え、『プリント』というテーマを課題と挙げて本活動を行ってきました。
5年経ち、多くの作家の協力を賜りながら作例と併せて素材を紹介する機会を設けることで、
緩やかに、しかし確実に阿波和紙による版表現の広がりへの感触を得られるようになってきたことを実感致します。
この度は、本活動を縁として出逢った精鋭の作家陣には、阿波和紙による新しい創作を試みて頂きました。
また、海外で活躍する作家陣による阿波和紙を使われた作品も、併せて一部紹介させて頂きます。

Since our first exhibition "Awagami Print Exhibition – 6 Artists and Print Expression" in 2007, we have been holding the print exhibitions demonstrating the potentials of Awa washi as an art medium.  2012 will mark the sixth anniversary since our first exhibition.  We have been continue to focus on the subject 'Print on paper' by development of washi as a material as primary origin of inheritance of tradition.

近年のプリント機材の発展と市場への浸透に伴い、写真業界のみならず、特に版表現を中心としたアート界へもデジタルプリント技法を用いた美術表現の試みが多く見られるようになってきました。殊にインクジェットプリントは機材の操性、データの再現性の向上の顕著さから、比較的容易に導入されてきました。海外のアート界ではこのようなデジタルを駆使した版表現は既にジャンルとして確立されていると言えますが、日本においてはその浸透は比較的漸進的であるかと思われます。そこで本年は、版表現のひとつとしてインクジェット技法を取り入れたミクストメディアによる美術表現をテーマに掲げ、版表現の幅を広げる喚起を目指すものとしました。国内外における気鋭のアーティスト12名が版表現の幅を広げ、種々の技法によるミクストメディア作品として完成されたものを展示公開致します。

In recent years, following the development of printing equipment and its market penetration, we are seeing ore and more artistic experimentation using digital printing techniques. This is seen not only in the photography industry, but in the art world as well, specifically with printmaking. Thanks to striking improvements in data reproduction and developments in easy to operate printing equipment, these techniques have become relatively easy to adopt. In the overseas art world, print art that incorporates digital techniques has already been established as a genre, but in Japan, this adoption has been relatively gradual. And now this year, we proposed a theme of using inkjet printing methods as a printing technique to be incorporated into mixed media fine art pieces, with the aim of encouraging artists to expand of the limits of pinging expression. In this exhibition, twelve energetic artists from Japan and abroad have done just that, using a variety of techniques in their mixed media works.

2007年を皮切りに開催を続けてきた「阿波紙と版表現展」は、この度で8回目を迎えることとなりました。地道に継続し続ける事でご縁も確実に増えていくことに意義を感じつつ、開催が慣習化することで新規性や気勢が薄れることへの懸念もまたよぎります。本年度は継続する事での長短を含めいくつかの区切りを感じ、これまでは東京を中心に出展作家と発表の場を得てきましたが、地場からの発信による伝統の継承を見返し、開催地を当地阿波山川から開催する運びとなりました。また、新たな地域とのつながりも期待し、続けて京都での移動展も開催致します。
日本人にはかねてより馴染みの素材であった和紙は、時代の流れに伴い需要を減らし、現代ではむしろ新しい素材として存在していると言えます。昨年度から、版表現のひとつとしてインクジェット技法を取り入れたミクストメディアによる美術表現をテーマに掲げ、インクジェット技法を取り入れることで版表現の幅を広げる喚起を目指しました。デジタルの技術・機材の発展に伴い、和紙に求められる機能、そして用途の可能性も広がりつつあります。このテクノロジーの進化と時代への浸透が、版表現のひとつであるインクジェット技法に新しい表現性と価値観を今後も創出し続けていくと考えられます。
この度の8名のアーティストによるAIJP（アワガミ インクジェットペーパー）をベースとしてインクジェットを取り入れた創作技法は、造形、写真、ドローイング、木版、リトグラフなど多様なジャンルに及び、豊かで新鮮な感性に満ちた表現は、現代に生きる伝統とテクノロジーのコラボレートの魅力と可能性を期待せずにはいられません。

The “Awagami Print Expression” got its start in 2007, and this will be its 8th incarnation. While gratefully acknowledging the steadily growing bonds we have made through holding the exhibition every year, we did begin to fear that the novelty and vigor of the project would grow weak due to habituation. By continuing it this year, we felt we were at a sort of juncture in many ways, both good and bad, and though we have used Tokyo as a center for exhibiting and publicizing artists' works until now, we have reexamined the merits of preserving tradition through basing ourselves in our own local region, and so this time the exhibition will be held here in Awa-Yamakawa. We are looking forward to building new local connections, and we also have a traveling exhibition planned for Kyoto.
Japanese people are already very familiar with washi as a material, but with the passage of time, demand for it has dimished, and in the present day, it could be said that it has in fact become a new material. Starting last year, we adopted mixed media incorporating inkjet printing methods as the theme for the exhibition with the intent of awakening a broader printing expression that incorporates inkjet printing methods. In following with developments in digital techniques and equipment, the functional demands placed on washi and the possibilities within that functionality are growing. The evolution of this technology and its increasing penetration over time indicate that inkjet printing will continue to be used as a way of creating new expressions and values.
The eight artists in this year's exhibition have all used AIJP (Awagami Inkjet Paper) as a base for their creative works, which incorporate inkjet printing as well as a wide variety of genres including sculpture, photography, drawing, woodblock printing, lithography, and more. Their works, rich and fresh in sensitivity, can't help but give me high hopes for the appeal and possiblity within collaborations between technology and tradition that lives on in the contemporary age.
In preparing for the exhibition, Hideki Kimura has contributed his assistance in choosing artists and preparing the Kyoto venue, and Graphic Corporation has offered technical assistance in washi printing. I'd like to take this opportunity to thank them sincerely for their contributions.

2007年を皮切りに開催を続けてきた「阿波紙と版表現展」は、この度で9回目を迎えます。その折々のテーマは時流や評価を窺いながら、素材や表現の技法、またはアーティストの構成などにより展開してまいりました。それは、アートの素材としての和紙の可能性を探りながら、より幅広い層、幅居広い表現域への周知と可能性を期待したものでもありました。

2012年よりは、殊にインクジェット技法による版表現へ動向に着目しています。開催地の展開も試みながら、より多くの人の目にふれ、幅広い層への創作手段のひとつとしての喚起となり得ることを願い、これからも実直に活動を続けていきたい所存です。

本展開催にあたり、倉地比沙支氏におけるキューレートにより個性豊かなアーティストとのご縁が更につながり、現代版画NAGOYAによる多大な協力を得られたことで愛知会場での開催も実りました。また、作品の制作においては、セントラル画材株式会社 セントラル出力センターによる技術支援を賜りました。この場を借りて厚く御礼申し上げます。

The Awagami Print Expression series has been held since 2007, and is now in its 9th iteration. The show has developed through the years, with themes taking cues from current affairs and feedback, materials and methods of expression, and artist makeup. It was created with the intention of exploring the possibilities of washi as an art medium, to expand its range of users, and expand knowledge of its expressive range as well.

Since 2012, we have been paying particular attention to trends in methods of expression using inkjet printing. We are also experimenting with locations for the exhibition so that even more people may see it, with the hopes of generating an awareness of the creative method in ever wider groups of people. We intend to continue our activities in earnest.

Thanks to the curation of Hisashi Kurachi we were able to make connections with many unique artists, obtain the generous cooperation of C.P.N. (Contemporary Prints NAGOYA), and secure an Aichi venue for the exhibition. Additionally, the Central Output Center of Central Gazai Co., Ltd. generously provided technical support with artwork production. Allow me to take this opportunity to express my gratitude.

和紙はかねてより馴染みの素材でありながら、現代では多くの層の人にとっては触れる機会の決して多くない、新しい素材の一つです。この活動も、和紙が改めて文化の中で深く馴染み、ふたたび身近な素材となるきっかけの一つとなることに想いを馳せています。

The Awagami Print Expression series has been held since 2007, and is now in its 10th iteration. This series, which has explored the concept and potential of washi as an art material, has brought us connections with a total of 83 artists from Japan and abroad.

In recent years, we have been paying particular attention to trends in methods of expression using inkjet printing, but for our tenth exhibition, we returned to our starting point. This year we collaborated with spirited artists who have a wide vision for their printmaking expressions, and put a focused effort into even the selection of their materials.

While washi is already a very well known material, many factions of people in contemporary society rarely have the opportunity to encounter it, and in this way it is a new material. One of the reasons for our activities in presenting this exhibition is to help return washi to a familiar place in our culture, and offer an opportunity for it to once again become a commonly used material.

Junri Ikushima and Kazuyoshi Shibuya selected the artists, and provided guidance for the direction of the exhibit. Allow me to take this opportunity to express my gratitude.
